EXPERIENCE
INMARSAT
- July 94-Dec 96: Operations Engineer, Network Operations Centre.
Special responsibility to make sure contingency arrangements
work: In charge of the backup Network Operations centre and its
upgrading and maintenance. In charge of disaster and rebuild
plans generally, and plans to operate over backup satellites.
Also general responsibility to make sure the NOC is faced with
no surprises.
- June 93 - June 94: Operations Engineer, Aero Group
- Nov 88 - June 93: Aero Div, GES Development Engineer.
Brought all the diverse parts of the ground segment of the
Inmarsat Aero communications network into operation. Developed
test methods, standards for GESs, resolved system problems with
station builders and owners. Ensured that actual GESs operated
correctly. Ensured that any system or particular problems that
emerged were quickly dealt with.

Engineer, investigating means of lowering the cost of Coast
Earth Stations working with Inmarsat.

COMSAT
- Sept 86 -Dec 88: Network Technology Dept, Comsat Labs.
Comsat delegate to US and international fora ensuring that the
new broadband data protocols (ATM, SONET etc. remained satellite
friendly, rather than being intrinsically restricted to fibre
optics.
- Sept 73 -Sept 86: Engineering Dept, Maritime Systems Div,
Comsat. `73-'78 Senior Design Engineer, `78-80, Manager, Access
and Control, `80-'86 Manager Network Engineering. part of small
team that introduced the first mobile satellite system, and
followed through to its subsequent evolution to the Inmarsat
network
- `69-'73: Designed and wrote communications protocol and
computer programs for Intelsat SPADE system. One of the first
uses of demand assigned channels over satellites.
- `68-'69: monitored RF contracts for the new earth stations
Comsat was building to work with the Intelsat III system
